Turkana County will hold World water day celebrations on 19th November 2017 in Turkana South and Loima Sub Counties. The County’s key message is to promote “Use of Latrines in ensuring prevention of diseases”. This stresses the need for community members to use latrines instead of bushes and lagas (seasonal rivers) so as to prevent contracting fecal related diseases that are expensive to treat and may result into deaths.

In Turkana County, several organizations and development partners have combined efforts with the County Government to ensure there is increase in latrine coverage since by June 2016, open defecation was at 88.4 per cent (The Standard Media Group, June 2016) and was leading in the whole of Kenya. Another report by Ministry of Health and Water and Sanitation Program done in 2014 placed open defecation in Turkana at 82.1%. In this County, most of the villages had never heard about latrines (low latrine awareness), some also had some traditional beliefs that use of latrines was not good while others associated it with bad omen and due to nomadic pastoralist way of life. However, these are some of the perceptions that are changing and of late the latrine coverage has increased. With the efforts of several partners such as UNICEF, Diocess of Lodwar, Feed the Children, Fred Hollows Foundation, OXFAM, Sight Savers International, ChildFund, 541 villages have been triggered and 2 villages have been declared as Open defecation free.

The two Venues for the Celebrations will be Ayanae Angurichana Village in Lokichar Town and Ngikukus in Lomil ward.
Turkana County Government through the Ministry of Health and Sanitation Services, UNICEF, Diocess of Lodwar, Catholic Relief Services, Feed the Children, Fred Hollows Foundation, OXFAM, Sight Savers International, ChildFund, UNIDO, World Vision and practical Action, Lokichar Community and Lomil Community are expected to attend.

The celebrations are implemented by the County Ministry of Health and Sanitation Services, WASH players, Lokichar and Lomil Communities.

The Celebrations are supported by Turkana County Government Ministry of Health and Sanitation Services, Fred Hollows Foundation, Sight Savers International, Catholic Relief Services, Diocese of Lodwar, Lokichar and Lomil Communities.
