Siaya County will commemorate World Toilet Day celebrations on 17th November 2017 at Uyawi Beach in Bondo Sub County. The County’s key theme is ‘to promote safe disposal of faeces by preventing open defecation,’ having been derived from the National theme ‘safely dispose babies’ faeces to prevent disease and reduce stunting.’ The County having attained 81% of its villages declared open defecation free(http://wash.health.go.ke/clts/user/loadUnitDashboard?id=2127), the message will highlight the importance of use of latrine and hand washing facilities to prevent the spread of water, sanitation and hygiene related diseases such as Cholera and bring awareness that babies faeces are still human waste which also propel the spread of diseases if not properly disposed off.
The success of the day will be as a result of the partnership between Ministry of Health Siaya County, UNICEF, KRC, North Gem Project, Plan International, KIWASH, AMREF, CARE KENYA, ACE AFRICA, Evidence Action, SANA ITL, MAP ITL and LLIXN/SILA AFRICA. An estimated 700 people including school going children will grace the occasion.
This year’s celebration will be presided upon by the Chief Officer of Health, Madam Dorothy Owino. Pllaned activities for the day include procession with banners, entertainment from school children, Community health volunteers, and Theatre groups, exhibitions of sanitation products and speeches from the Ministry of Health and representatives of the partners.
The celebration is implemented by the County Ministry of Health, Bondo Sub County Team, Sector Partners and Uyawi Beach Community including the fishermen.
The celebrations are supported by the County Ministry of Health Government of Kenya, County Government of Siaya, Sub County Government of Bondo, UNICEF, PLAN ITL, LLIXN/SILA AFRICA, KIWASH, EVIDENCE ACTION and KRC.
