In 2013, the United Nations General Assembly officially designated November 19 as World Toilet Day. It is a day that strives to engage and educate people and their communities worldwide to encourage support for sanitation-related issues.
So, how do you raise awareness for #WorldToiletDay and openly discuss where does our poo go? Just whisk egg whites, gradually whisk in sugar till stiff peaks form, fold in cocoa powder – pipe into tiny piles – and bake! This was one of many treats donated to UNU-INWEH’s poo-themed bake sale held on Tuesday, 14 November in honor of World Toilet Day! Other poo-themed treats that were on sale were:
- Chocolate cupcakes
- Chocolate meringues
- Variety of cookies
- Pecan tarts
- Chocolate mousse
- Coconut dessert
When asked, where does our poo go? Many people responded with “I don’t know” or “I don’t want to talk about it”. It is precisely for these reasons that WTD was initiated – to break the stigma around sanitation and to care about what happens to our waste. Food is a great way to get people talking, even if it is over a little bit of chocolate poop!
Proceeds from the bake sale will be donated to WaterAid, an international non-profit organization that works to provide people with clean water, safe sanitation and hygiene.
